In the early 60s, Pattaya Bay was a tranquil fishing village. But on June 29, 1959, the tranquility was disrupted when four US Army trucks, carrying several soldiers, arrived. These soldiers, who had rented bamboo huts at the bay's southern end, became the center of attention for the intrigued locals.
This seemingly ordinary visit marked the beginning of Pattaya's transformation. By the peak of the Vietnam War, Pattaya, just 154 kilometers southeast of Bangkok, was chosen as the Rest & Recreation Centre for American military personnel. This decision by a few American GIs in 1959 sparked Pattaya's tourism boom, forever altering its landscape.
The original fishermen and bamboo huts have since vanished. Post-war, Pattaya saw an influx of global tourists, and by the mid-1980s, it was the most renowned seaside resort in South East Asia. However, rapid growth led to infrastructural and environmental challenges. Negative perceptions, including labels like "sin city," deterred some tourists.
Yet, Pattaya has evolved. Significant investments have revitalized the city's image, improving infrastructure and introducing attractions. Today, international brands like McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and Cafe Nana have established their presence in Pattaya, particularly in modern shopping centers like the Royal Garden Plaza. The Central Festival Pattaya Beach Centre, opened in 2009, stands as Asia's largest beachfront shopping venue, further cementing Pattaya's reputation as a shopping haven.
Pattaya's attractions are diverse. From the panoramic views atop Khao Phra Tamnak to the unique exhibits at "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" museum, there's something for everyone. The city's nightlife is equally varied, with venues like the Cafe Nana coffee bar and hotel offering a sophisticated ambiance.
Despite its past, Pattaya today is a sought-after holiday destination, attracting tourists from around the world. Its rich history, combined with modern amenities, makes it a unique blend of the old and new, ensuring that life in Pattaya remains ever vibrant and appealing.
